DEER launched in Cluj-Napoca a project to modernize and digitalize the electricity distribution network, which provides for the replacement of 190,150 electricity meters with smart equipment. The work was initiated in May 2026, with the installation of the first smart meter, and is scheduled to be completed in October 2028.

The new meters allow automatic and remote reading of consumption index. This will eliminate consumption estimates and errors associated with manual reading, and users will benefit from invoices based on actual consumption and more efficient distribution services.

The replacement of meters will be carried out by DEER representatives through a third-party contractor. Prior to the intervention, a notice will be posted in each apartment building stairwell or place of consumption specifying the exact period in which the work will be carried out. DEER reminds consumers that permitting access to the place of consumption for replacement is an obligation provided by current legislation.

If the user does not permit access, they will be notified to schedule a new intervention. If the work cannot be completed after two attempts, the user will receive a notice through the supplier. After the period specified in the notice expires, the place of consumption may be disconnected from the distribution network according to legal provisions.

DEER's general manager, Mihaela Rodica Suciu, emphasized that the digitalization of distribution networks is a strategic investment for building the energy infrastructure of the future, and more efficient services and billing based on actual consumption will contribute to a more transparent relationship with users.
