A chapel in Cluj's Central Cemetery wins international award

The project, signed by TEKTUM Architecture & Art office, won the Architecture MasterPrize 2026 in the "Other Architecture" category, combining a 19th-century facade with a modern extension.

The chapel occupies the Lutheran part of the Central Cemetery (Házsongárd), one of Cluj's oldest historic spaces, and serves both for funeral ceremonies and as headquarters of the Házsongárd Association, which manages the cemetery's heritage preservation.

The project started from a building from the end of the 19th century, in an advanced state of deterioration. The architects preserved the classicist facade, at the request of the Monuments Commission, and added an extension inspired by the shape of the funeral monuments around it, designed as a split stone with oblique surfaces. Above the old pediment rises a bell tower, and the roof slopes down towards the stairs leading to the columbarium in the basement.

The dark gray facade recalls the black marble funeral stones nearby, while dull red brick, oak wood and corten steel complete the exterior. Inside, exposed concrete maintains a sobering appearance, and the building's east-west orientation allows light to reach above the coffin during services.

The project belongs to the TEKTUM Architecture & Art office, coordinated by architect Gábor Tóthfalusi, and the construction was carried out by Weberbau.

For Clujeans who left the country, the international distinction brings attention back to one of the city's oldest and most symbolic places, Házsongárd Cemetery.
