Climbers and rescuers renovate anchors on Turda Gorge cliff routes.

The Public County Service Salvamont-Salvaspeo Cluj, together with the local climbing community, has completed a major project to renovate climbing routes in Ungureasca Cave, located in Cheile Turzii. The event dedicated to this completion will take place on October 17 and 18, 2026.

All old mechanical anchors have been replaced with new high-quality stainless steel anchors (316L), with chemical fixing, which have an estimated lifespan of about 30 years. The new system no longer requires additional drilling of the rock, which protects the limestone and allows the routes to be used for multiple decades without invasive interventions on the environment.

The works, carried out to international standards, took approximately two years and targeted about 60 routes, many of them considered among the most technically difficult in the region, being located right on the cave ceiling. The materials were provided by Salvamont-Salvaspeo Cluj, and the loops for the cave ceiling were offered by P3 Romania company.

The President of the Cluj County Council, Alin Tișe, congratulated the Salvamont team for the professionalism shown in this undertaking, highlighting its contribution to the safety of climbers and the protection of natural heritage in Cheile Turzii.

The event will also be a moment of remembrance for Romica "Jan" Crișan, one of the pioneers of sport climbing in the area, who created the first overhanging routes in Ungureasca Cave and was a mentor to generations of young climbers.
