The institution, with over 2,300 students and faculties in Miercurea Ciuc, Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Mureș, relies mainly on funding from the Hungarian government.

Sapientia private university, with its central headquarters in Cluj-Napoca and faculties in Miercurea Ciuc, Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Mureș, marked 25 years of activity through an anniversary event attended by the UDMR president, Kelemen Hunor.

The institution has over 2,300 students and does not receive direct funding from the Romanian state budget for study places; the main resources come from the Hungarian government, through the Bethlen Gábor Fund, as well as from European funds, projects managed by the Romanian Ministry of Education, and tuition fees.

The anniversary takes place at a time when the new government in Budapest, led by Péter Magyar, has announced a reevaluation of funding given to Hungarian institutions and foundations outside its borders, which has generated fears among university staff and the Hungarian community about the future of funds allocated to Sapientia.

Kelemen Hunor emphasized that most of today's students "were already born in a Transylvania where there is a Hungarian university", something that for previous generations was only a dream, and now is part of everyday life.

For Cluj natives of Hungarian origin now living abroad, the university's story shows how access to higher education in one's mother tongue, once considered a rarity, has become, in twenty-five years, an ordinary reality for young people in Ardeal.
