The 100th intervention was performed by surgeon Cătălin Vlad's team on a 59-year-old patient diagnosed with rectal cancer.

The "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță" Oncology Institute in Cluj-Napoca reached 100 robotic-assisted surgical interventions in less than five months from the first surgery of this type. The announcement was made on October 12 by the institute's management.

The first robotic-assisted surgery took place at the end of May, when a 71-year-old patient with a gynecological oncological condition was operated on using the Da Vinci surgical system. The system allows the surgeon to control instruments introduced into the patient's body through small incisions from a console, with the help of an enlarged image of the operated area, and the robot reproduces the doctor's movements for precision maneuvers.

The Institute launched a procurement procedure in 2026 for a robotic surgery system. The participation announcement, published in February, estimated a value of 56.526 million lei, over ten million euros, but the contracted value was later 18.2 million lei.

For Clujeans who left the country, the news shows that their hometown hospital now offers modern surgical technologies at the level of international standards.
