Medical premiere in Cluj: innovative therapy for Alzheimer's disease
The first patient in Romania has begun treatment at Cluj-Napoca County Emergency Clinical Hospital, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Dafin Mureșanu, less than a year after the therapy was approved by the European Commission.

At the Neurology Department of Cluj-Napoca County Emergency Clinical Hospital, treatment has begun for the first patient in Romania with an innovative therapy for Alzheimer's disease in its incipient stage. This is a therapy approved by the European Commission less than a year ago, administered under the coordination of university professor doctor Dafin Mureșanu, head of the Neurology Clinic.
Unlike treatments available so far, which focus on symptom improvement, the new therapy acts on the biological mechanism of the disease and can slow cognitive decline when administered early. According to cited clinical studies, the treatment can reduce by approximately 35% the rate of disease progression in patients in very early stages, delaying the transition to more severe forms.
The therapy is aimed at people with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease, in whom the presence of beta-amyloid deposits is confirmed. Representatives of the company supporting the program and involved physicians emphasized that early diagnosis is essential, and Cluj-Napoca County Hospital is the first center in the country treating such a patient, with plans to expand the program to other specialized centers.
Doctors warn that the goal is not a cure, but slowing the disease's progression, with benefits such as memory preservation, maintaining independence in daily activities, and delaying the need for permanent care. Treatment can be stopped once investigations show that amyloid plaques have decreased to a very low level.
