Romania's national volleyball team achieved a historic victory at BT Arena in Cluj-Napoca, defeating France, the Olympic champion and former European champion. The Group D match of the European Championship was played Wednesday evening in front of over 5,000 spectators.

The French won the first two sets relatively easily, but the Romanians did not give up. They managed to win the third set with a score of 20 in the fourth set, after a dramatic battle that ended 35-33, with four match points saved. The decisive set was won by Romania 15-12.

This is not Romania's first victory against France at a recent European tournament. At the last European Championship in 2023, Romania defeated France 3-1 in groups, a moment considered the biggest surprise of the tournament at that time. At that edition, Romania also finished third in the same Group D with the same number of points: 9.

With this victory, Romania finished Group D in third place with 9 points, after France with 13 points and Germany with 11 points. In the round of 16, Romania's opponent will be Ukraine.
